How To Up Your Email Marketing Game

N

othing peeves me more than long emails that don’t get to the point. Like most executives, I get a lot of emails. And if I need to play detective to figure out the point of your email, it just might get lost in my trash.

When drafting emails for marketing or sales, you need to make it easy for the recipient to read and react to what you’ve sent. Here are three quick editing tips to improve your marketing emails so that you can get higher response rates:

1. Decide on one objective and stick to it.

Many marketers are tempted to cram in as many calls-to-action in their email campaigns as possible, hoping that at least one will be relevant to the reader. Here’s what really happens: 1. your audience stops reading because your email doesn’t feel relevant, or 2. the email becomes confusing with too many choices, so your audience takes no action.

Fix this mistake by choosing one objective and sticking to it. Cut anything that doesn’t directly tie back to the action that you want your audience to take.

2. Remove unnecessary sentences.

Each sentence should provide value to your client. Your emails should contain: a greeting, a hook, bare bones explanation, and a CTA. That’s it. Cut everything else.

Here’s what I am talking about:

Hey there,

How are you? I hope all is well. It sure can be tough being a startup, don’t you think? There are so many things to get done and so little time. One of the biggest problems I’ve noticed is that some startups have trouble with their marketing and PR efforts. They have worked hard, focused energy on engineering, and developed great products, but they can’t seem to reach their customers. Does this sound familiar to you?

Great, then I think I’ve got a cool solution for you. I’ve just started a new company just for startups. It is called mark.ady (pronounced mark-uh-dee). The name is a combination of the words marketing and Ady, which is my last name. Cool, right? Anyway, mark.ady is a new marketing and PR firm that works exclusively with startups like yours to provide them with insanely great marketing and PR. Our goal is to help transform your company into one that is profitable, well-known and thriving.

Because it is a new business, we thought we want to reward our first few customers. So, we are having a flash-sale for the month of August. Can be cut down to this:

Hey there,

I noticed that some startups have trouble with their marketing and PR efforts. They have worked hard, focused energy on engineering, and developed great products, but they can’t seem to reach their customers. Does this sound familiar to you?

3. Shorten each sentence.

Go back through to see if you can cut out unnecessary words within each sentence. For example, the email above can be whittled down to:

Hey there,

Many startups have trouble with marketing. They develop great products, but can’t seem to reach their customers. Sound familiar?
